From thechristianbeat.org:

The Union of Sinners and Saints, a band featuring Petra’s lead singer John Schlitt and Whiteheart founding member Billy Smiley, is bringing back an oldie, but a goodie with a new recording of the No. 1 hit “Independence Day.” The remake, originally from Whiteheart’s popular “Powerhouse” album, was produced by Smiley and features Schlitt’s distinctive vocals. The single, which is being released today, is going for adds at Christian Rock and Christian CHR-formatted radio stations.

Jeff Van Driel, CEO and Founder of Suite 28c Records, commented “Whiteheart and Petra were a big part of what formed my musical taste growing up in a small rural town in Canada and this album combines the best of what made those groups so special. It is truly an honor for Suite 28c to represent The Union of Sinners and Saints and hope that this record reaches many with its message.”

“Independence Day” is from the eponymously-titled CD of ten original songs and updated versions of Petra’s Beyond Belief and Whiteheart’s Indy Day, set for release on June 17 and available for preorder now on iTunes. In addition to Schlitt and Smiley, the band features Whiteheart bassist Anthony Sallee, Jason Fowler, Jon Knox and Jonathan Crone.

Though a new band, The Union of Sinners and Saints combines members from two of the best-selling Christian rock bands in history. Petra and Whiteheart collectively have sold more than 12 million records, charted 25 No. 1 songs and garnered numerous Grammy and Dove Awards. In addition to the musical histories, the band also merges the friendship between Schlitt and Smiley.

"John and I got together last Fall and started writing some songs and discussed both of our histories and journeys,” Smiley said. “After seeing the chemistry and friendship that developed, we were excited with the new material we were creating, and started brainstorming about taking this out on the road this year.”

“It only made sense to feature Petra and Whiteheart favorites along with some of the new songs we were writing in the studio.” said Schlitt. “We realized we had a lot of new ideas swirling around in our heads that we wanted to share, both musically and lyrically, songs that were on our hearts and minds. And yet we also wanted to celebrate with all of our friends and fans some of the memorable songs, moments, and performances that they have been a part of over the years.

“The album and live events,” Schlitt said, “will incorporate the kind of artistry and ministry that will remind (fans) of the early years of Christian Rock, but also usher in a new energy and excitement.”

The Union of Sinners and Saints currently is touring throughout North America
in support of the new music.

Cant tell you how excited about this i was.... and how im not anymore...2 of my favourite groups coming together and.. flopping. I still love John's vocals but the songs need to be good for him to shine. They are very bland rock.

The Independence Day (Whiteheart cover) and Beyond Belief (Petra cover) are NOWHERE near as good as the originals... and should not have been done. Some tracks like Old Guys Rule are just plain awful. OK, there are a few tracks that are great from what i briefly heard but what a wasted opportunity for something great with the people involved.

Theres another guy who sings some lead vocals on the album too... quite a good voice - not sure who it is..

That's really disappointing to hear. I'll be honest, releasing a hymn as their first single already had me suspicious, but I was hopeful. Plus the roster on this had so much potential. I mean, they got bloody Dann Huff!

Yeah, what a great roster!

If you're a creepy christian freak.

Sounds awful to me... as bad as the band name.

    • Ordered Saturday, arrived today. Wasn't expecting them that quickly. I especially like the stickered custom-fitted protective mailer that the Live at Budokan Tokyo 1983 set came in, protecting it from being banged against other merchandise in the carton. Very nicely priced (see my threads in the deals section).

    • Awesome! I got my copy last week. About a year ago, they said announced that they were re-recording their songs, but I'm not sure if they're still doing it.
    • They released a double best of, Ultimate Hits and double CD of Masterpieces two years ago.
    • Yeah pretty good band, the cd is hard to find , I got the demo recordings cd they released on Street Legacy back in 2013.
    • "Suspicious Heart" by Van Stephenson
    • I wound up picking this one up as well, and I must say, this has been a most pleasant surprise. Very good melodic rock/AOR throughout, and gets better with each listen. Not sure why they haven't released "Midnight Lady" as a single/video, as it is far and away the best track on the album... IMO of course.
    • This one is really good honestly, 10 songs, pretty much all their big hits. Very concise.
    • I think most people know my stance on these two. I love LA Guns and think Tracii is one of the best guitarists to come out of the hair metal scene, and while I like Stryper I have really gone off them due to Michaels compulsion to release new material every second Wednesday. I have not bought the last 2 or 3 Stryper albums, and a bunch of other stuff he is involved in because of this. Hell, didnt even pick the first Sunbomb album up til early this year and only then it was because I got it for £5 instead of the usual £13 to £15 that Frontiers CDs usually cost. That album did not impress me. Musically it was tight but Sweets vocals were pretty "meh", and sounds like they are gonna be even worse on this album. Have to agree to what has already been said, but I can barely even understand what he is singing. Now while I am fine with listening to foreign language songs, if a singers native tongue is English, I wanna be able to understand what he is singing. Fuck me, there are death metal bands out there easier to understand than this. If I didnt know the song title, I would think it was called I'm bating bulls yeah
