Spotify

From previous posts, I know there are a few people on here that use Spotify, so I was just wondering what people think of it? Is it just like another version of iTunes, but with a monthly subscription instead of paying for individual tracks? And is there much by way of rock and metal on the free version?

You cant get on for free anymore as it over subscribed - so the only way forward is to pay (think its about £10/month)....for that you get ad free / unlimited listening......and yeah there is loads of rock on there. You can find pretty much all the Frontiers releases for example. Arguably it is better for modern rock and I listened to most of the modern stuff from 2010 on Spotify....I think I only bought about 3 or 4 modern discs. Obviously new albums will only appear after release and sometimes it can be a few weeks after.

Im one of the lucky ones who got on for free, but you do get adds....not that many so it doesnt bother me too much.

Would I pay for it??? Yes, I think I would. Also if you do pay for it you can have the app on your iphone as well which is pretty awesome - unfortunately for me the app only works if you have a paying account.

Cheers

Cheers Glen, that's useful. Their website does still say there is a free version, but it has less on it, more ads and you have to be invited by an existing user to get it.

App on your iPhone? I wish - I'll probably get an iPhone around the time teleportation is invented!

If you know or research how 'to invite', I have no problem inviting you......the free version still has masses of stuff on it....well worth having :-))

Bringing this back on topic just a little... ;)

I am a $9.99/month subscriber to Spotify Premium, and I fucking love it. It has most of what I want to listen to at any given time, from Mozart Violin Concertos, to Place Vendome, to Charm City Devils, to Gemini: Five, etc.

The disturbing thing is it has definitely cut back my CD buying just because with my iPhone and a variety of personal computers I can listen to whatever I want, wherever I want without hauling part of my CD collection around.

I'm a big fan... even if part of me kinda doesn't want to be... :(

me too....Im on the free version so can only listen to a song 5 times before it becomes unavailable, but this is well enough to judge a release before purchase.

& as you say nearly everything is on there.....the only thing I cant find is Adrenaline Mob.

I really wish more people here used this. It's now completely free in the U.S. (you just have to tolerate an occasional commercial), and I've been able to find pretty much every band mentioned in these forums. It would be cool to get some playlists from the guys here that like the same stuff I do.

As far as I know, it's not available in Canada, yet. And I'm not savvy enough to use a false IP address.

I use it but hate that it continually wants to link to Facebook. Really annoying sometimes.

Still it is a brilliant source for music so can't complain too much.

Spotify no longer requires a Facebook account. You can sign up with nothing more than an email address.

If anyone's interested my username is ovalseven. Just put this in the search field: spotify:user:ovalseven

Most of my collection is Modern Rock in the style of Hinder or Daughtry, some Hard Rock and the occasional Country tune. AOR is ok as long as it's not heavy on the keyboards or Hallmark card lyrics.

As an example, here's what's new to my collection in 2013: http://open.spotify....HbpfI99YoVRo5xr

Is anyone using Spotify these days or is there something better out there? (and yes I know CDs are better but I mean is there a better online streaming service?)

FaceTubes. ;}

I don't know. I don't use any streaming services, as I just don't like them.

I'm not aware of anything better, but then again I don't find any faults with Spotify that need to be remedied.

I use it to evaluate releases from labels that don't send me promos. Now that Frontiers has gone down the shitter with how they are handling promos I'll likely use Spotify for their releases as well.

Youboob is fine for the occasional song, but for listening to entire albums, Spotify is infinitely better, IMO.

Apple music probably has slightly more tracks....but its Apple ;-)

I use the free version of Spotify at mo but thinking of subscribing to go mobile.

Yeah I despise anything 'apple'. I feel they try to take too much control over the user in all of their platforms.

I bought a new phone and received 6 months free Spotify Premium and to be honest it's pretty cool. I don't want to like it because I've always been against 'cloud' storage / streaming etc but it is actually very convenient and might actually allow me to hear and comment on new releases more often.

If mobile phone suppliers were to write Spotify into their contracts it would probably irradicate illegal downloading overnight.

Hmm interesting point. I dunno... it would probably go some way to reducing the problem but I have a feeling that MP3s and other digital formats are going to be around a lot longer.

    • No official release yet so don't know when exactly the album is supposed to come out but I'm assuming it's this year. I'm sure you're all brimming with excitement.
    • I posed him that exact question on his discord page as to what his future plans are.... He said he plans to relax for a bit, do his You Tube thing, keep writing new music and then will decide how to release that music.  He said as of now he's thinking he'll either do a solo thing or form his own band.  He didn't say this but I'd sort of envision a Daughtry type "band" where he kind of puts a band behind his name. So essentially, I think you're right on with his plans.  Ultimately, I think like you say, the control is a big part of it.  I think he wants to be able to operate on his own schedule to maintain his health and family obligations. It'll be interesting to see what sound the new material takes on.  It would seem logical to think it would be rock/melodic rock of some sort since that's really the type of music he's built his following with but he certainly has shown he can dabble anywhere from AOR to metal.
    • Glad I got to see them with Erik in front. All the best to him, definitely looking forward to his future outings when he is fully recovered. Would be cool to see him form his own band, where he could take control, and play around in different genres, from full on metal, to soothing AOR, the guy is so versatile.
    • Remedy - Crying Heart. One I've just seen thanks to the Iridium channel.  From the upcoming album. It's a Killer.
    • Let's not forget Benny Hill. What a Magnificent show that was.
    • Yeah... I dunno about that. It would be too cringe. Who knows? If I'm high enough, I might submit a video.
    • Yep great track and if you fancy being in the video for "The Feeling" nows your chance.
    • I'm proud to say that I had this single when I was a mere 8 years old. KISS were big down here then. Norman Gunston is Iconic for Aussies of my vintage.  The face ln the bottom left says it all. Hilarious.
    • All in all, this is a great story. Erik played a brilliant, well received, albeit short cameo with one of our favourite bands.  It was a win, win, win. A win for us, a win for Skid Row (the album certainly put them back on the map) and a win for Erik, adding this to his already impressive resume. The fact that it was so amicable with both parties is also great to see.
    • I really like this album - not every song on it but there are some surprisingly catchy melodies all over. Personally I think the singer adds great energy to the mix. It reminds me of the earlier Bai Bang ("closer to you")
